What a Florida Medical Card Costs Per Year
The state fee is the easy part and the part everyone quotes. The reason people's budgets are wrong isn't the amount. It is that two separate clocks run at once.
The two clocks
Your card is valid for one year. Your doctor's certification runs at most 210 days. Those are different lengths, issued by different people, and nothing in the system lines them up for you.
Follow the arithmetic and the surprise disappears: if a certification covers at most 210 days and a year is 365, one certification cannot carry you from one card renewal to the next. Most patients see a doctor roughly twice a year and pay the state once.
Almost every "what does it cost" answer online quotes the state fee and one certification, which understates a normal year. That is the whole reason this page exists.
210 is the maximum a certification can run, and plenty run shorter. That difference catches people out. Fla. Stat. 381.986(4)(f) caps a certification at three 70-day supply limits, or six 35-day limits of smokable marijuana. Both work out to 210 days. Yours may be shorter, which makes the gap wider instead of narrower.
What the state charges
$75 for the Medical Marijuana Use Registry identification card, payable each year when you renew. Paying online adds a $2.75 convenience fee, which makes it $77.75 that way; a check or money order avoids it. It is identical wherever in Florida you apply, and it is the only price this site publishes anywhere.
It is also the smaller half of the bill in most years, which is the thing quoting it alone conceals.
The doctor's fee, and how to find yours
Certification pricing is set by each clinic, so the accurate number is always the one your own clinic gives you. It is a quick phone call and clinics answer it every day.
Ask two things: what an initial certification costs, and what a renewal costs, because they are usually different. Ask before you book, and you will have the full year mapped out in a single call.
Who to ask is a separate page: we keep the state's own list of every qualified doctor in Lee County, rebuilt from the Department of Health's weekly file.
Two more that people forget to ask. Whether the fee covers the state application as well as the appointment, because some bundle it and some do not. And what a re-certification costs if your doctor wants to see you again sooner than 210 days.
The calendar, which is the useful part
Track both clocks separately. They will drift apart, and the one that catches people is the certification instead of the card.
The state asks for card renewals 45 days before expiration, so the reminder you want is a month and a half ahead of the date on the card, not on it.
Since July 2026 the order matters. The Registry will not let you finish a card application, new or renewal, without a current or scheduled certification on file, so the doctor appointment comes first and the paperwork second. Our guide to that rule change covers what it means in practice.
And nothing here is covered by insurance. Medical cannabis is not a prescription in the sense an insurer recognizes, so every part of this is out of pocket.
If you do not have one yet, the state registry is where the application lives, and our full guide covers the four steps in order.
General information about fees and timing, not medical, legal or financial advice. State fees are set by the state and can change; confirm current amounts with the Office of Medical Marijuana Use, and confirm clinic pricing with the clinic.
